Mega and Other File-Hosting Services’ Blockade is Overbroad, Italian Authorities Say

October 12, 2014
As we reported here, this summer an Italian court blocked access to several websites for copyright infringement, including Mega and the Russian Internet giant Mail.ru. A few days ago, Italian authorities finally lifted that ban.

Some websites, including Mega, negotiated a court settlement with the Office of the Prosecutor of Rome. Other sites successfully appealed the decision before the Court of Appeal of Rome. In both instances, the Italian authorities agreed with the argument that the blocking orders were overbroad, especially because the copyright infringement occurred on individual pages and a blockade of the entire website was disproportionate.
